China (2014-2017--Chengdu and Beijing)


Jerry and I spent three years of our life teaching English to Chinese university students as part of BYU China Teachers. Our adventures were many and colorful.  We were greatly changed and so so privileged to know and love so many--both Chinese and our fellow American teachers.  This experience doesn't deserve just a chapter.  It deserves a book.  So I will save the stories and my best pictures for that book.

(my bridal shower group) (Lana, Polly, Elaine--Jenny Lake, Grand Tetons) (with my favorite "Aht teachah", Eileen, in Philly on a mural tour) In truth, I could fill an entire book with pictures of friends.  That has been my one consistent delightful blessing throughout my entire life.  I don't remember, but I'm sure I shared nursery space with some slap happy newborns!  These friends have carried me over bridges that I might have stumbled over by myself.  I have boxes of letters I just can't bring myself to part with.  Someday maybe I'll excerpt them and make another book. Survival--B.Y.U. Youth Leadership 480

(showing off my red long johns the morning we left) (a fast and testimony meeting during the final days) When I was 20 I packed an army blanket, a pocket knife, my toothbrush, a couple of books, a journal, a primitive camera and a few changes of socks and underwear and headed for the desert of southern Utah with this motley group of strangers. This experience was affectionately known as Survival, but on my BYU transcript it comes up as the somewhat sterile Youth Leadership 480. A bus dropped us off in the general vicinity of Green River, UT, and picked us up in Escalante, UT, exactly 30 days later. We filled that month with walking, starving, climbing, walking, bonding, huddling around campfires, hiking, orienteering, losing one another, finding one another, eating cactus and wild berries, talking ad nauseum about food, and generally having the time of our young lives.
